About Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), and is generally considered the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Many retailers have opened extremely early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but since many state employees and schools have the day off, followed by a weekend, there is often an increased number of shoppers on that one day alone. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year.
The name comes from the concept that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss (“in the red”, from the color of the ink used in hand written ledgers to indicate debt) from January through November, and “Black Friday” is the day that retailers begin to turn a profit, or are “in the black” (the color of the ink used to show profit). But for many larger retailers, especially those such as Walmart and Amazon, it is just a sizable boost in profit so exceptional deals are offered to bring customers into their stores.
Recently, several retailers including Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Best Buy and Walmart opened very early on Friday or even late Thursday night.
CyberMonday is the Monday after the holiday weekend, and many shoppers turn to online savings after their in-store shopping trips. Online stores have started to offer deals before Monday, even much earlier in the week of Thankgiving. An advantage of shopping online is many of the same deals are available in larger quantity, there are no long lines (but at times a slower connection) or crowds, and one can shop at several locations in a short period of time. Online coupon codes are also still valid online but may be excluded in-store.
The hot toys for the year are generally easier to locate online than in store. Resources include Amazon and Toys R Us and at times, eBay.
